DIGISOLAR: Revolutionizing Solar Sensors for NewSpace Applications

     |

February 13, 2025

FOSSA Systems is proud to be part of DIGISOLAR, an ambitious project aiming to redefine solar sensor technology for NewSpace applications. As a member of the Andalucía Aerospace cluster, we collaborate with leading organizations to drive innovation in space technology.

What is DIGISOLAR?

DIGISOLAR (“New Asynchronous Digital Solar Sensor for NewSpace Applications with Event-Based Architecture”) is a groundbreaking initiative focused on developing a fully digital solar sensor with an unprecedented level of precision and efficiency. The project introduces an innovative asynchronous data reading technique and an event-based sensor architecture, setting a new standard in solar sensing technology.

By replacing traditional photodiode-based solar sensors with an advanced digital interface, DIGISOLAR significantly reduces power consumption, simplifies communication interfaces, ensures complete immunity to albedo, and enhances overall accuracy. Additionally, the sensor is designed to maintain high radiation resistance, making it ideal for demanding space environments.

Project Phases

DIGISOLAR is structured into three key phases:

  1. Technology validation and image chip improvement: Laying the foundation for enhanced sensor performance.
  2. Implementation of a fully functional digital solar sensor prototype: Including the validation of the improved image chip.
  3. Qualification and in-orbit demonstration: Ensuring the sensor meets the rigorous requirements for space applications.

A Collaborative Effort

The success of DIGISOLAR relies on a strong consortium of companies and institutions, including SOLAR MEMS, Alter Technology, Simetrycal, FOSSA Systems, the Institute of Microelectronics at the University of Seville, and the SECPHO cluster. The project is managed and coordinated by Andalucía Aerospace, the aerospace and defense cluster of Andalusia.

At FOSSA Systems, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of space technology, and DIGISOLAR represents a significant step toward the future of space-based sensing solutions. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting journey!
